Position Description
Position Summary
The Flight Nurse works collaboratively with the Flight Paramedic completing air transport missions. The Flight Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals in accordance with licensure standards. The Flight Nurse provides leadership in maintaining standards of patient care, customer service and direction of the multi-disciplinary patient care team. The Flight Nurse as a key member of the team accepts individual and collective accountability for the creation of a healing environment demonstrated by positive patient/family centered care services, behaviors, and relationships. The Flight Nurse functions outside the hospital at prehospital and referring facility locations, during transport and within the hospital, using physician verbal orders and AtlantiCare/JeffSTAT Medical Treatment protocols.
The Flight Nurse is responsible for ensuring the aircraft is always mission ready and the narcotic count is accurate and appropriately documented every shift.
The Flight Nurse may also serve as a Preceptor (FTO) to new staff as assigned by department leadership.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: Graduate of a NLN accredited School of Nursing. BSN required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Flight Nurse: Current ACLS, PALS, BLS, neonatal resuscitation program (NRP), PHTLS or ITLS. Current CFRN certification or must be obtained within 18 months of hire or transfer. Initial CFRN certification exam attempted within 10 months of hire or transfer. Licensed or eligible as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania. Licensed or eligible as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey OR current multi-state license required. Licensed or eligible as a Registered Nurse in State of Delaware OR current multi-state license required. Certified or eligible as a Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN) or Paramedic (EMT-P) in the State of Pennsylvania. Certified or eligible as Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) and Air Crew Member- FN in the State of New Jersey. Valid driver's license. Completion of the National Incident Command Courses; ICS 100, 200 700, 800, 5a.
EXPERIENCE: Three to five years (minimum 5000 hours) of recent critical care nursing experience required. ICU/MICU/CCU/TICU preferred. Recent/previous flight or transport experience preferred. Effective communication skills both written and verbal are required. Strong clinical and critical thinking skills required with the ability to work autonomously as part of a team. Successful completion of the JeffSTAT/Air Methods Flight Team Training Program required.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Ongoing validated competency as required both generally and within unit parameters as they relate to patient populations' needs. Participation in quality assurance, educational and public relations activities. Successful completion of yearly clinical competency exam, simulation, and Medical Command Review. Completion of yearly Air Methods, JeffSTAT, and Jefferson Hospital required training.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Potential for exposure to the hazards in the hospital and prehospital environment including but not limited to: blood borne pathogens, infectious disease exposure and hazardous substances.
Flight specific: Exposure to potential hazards associated with flight including but not limited to variable weather conditions and mechanical failure. Due to aircraft performance parameters, the position has individual crew weight thresholds which are checked on a quarterly basis for weight and balance requirements. This position requires lifting, pushing, or pulling with assistance, equipment weighing 100 lbs or more. Position also requires lifting, loading, and unloading patients with assistance weighing 300 lbs or greater. This position requires sitting, standing, walking, stooping, crouching, and climbing.
